The threading on the joins are utterly important for the proper functioning of the instrument. They should be controlled on a regular basis by the player and if neccessary be rethreaded. In many cases the reason for an unstable drone lies in threading that starts leaking air.

The threading needs to give an airtight seal and should be tight and flexible at the same time. For our threading we use cotton mending yarn that was treated with bees or cheese wax. Through this procedure the thread becomes more durable and resistant against humidity.

In addition to this the finished threading can be rubbed with a thin layer of vaseline or  deer tallow.

The threading is applied with a fair amount of tension and something “criss-crossy”. Threading that was applied too accurate is usually to tight and lacks elasticity.

Teflon tape should only be used for repair in case of a real emergency.
